The Flat-Coated Retriever is descended from North American Newfoundlands brought into Great Britain from Canada. The Flat-Coated Retriever dates back to the mid nineteenth century. The Flat-Coated Retriever almost died out during World War II. The Flat-Coated Retriever was supposed to have been descended from the St. John's Water Dog, but this turns out not to be the case. Flat-Coated Retrievers greet other Flat-Coats with a kiss, with each licking the lips of the other dog.
